After some key departures from the team, Dykes got busy in the portal this offseason.
5:11 PM on Feb 16, 2024 Biggest unanswered question: Who will emerge as the clear WR1? Before last season, Williams was the clear heir apparent to Quentin Johnston as this team’s lead receiver. While he had some great moments during the season, his overall production left a lot to be desired. There was never a clear-cut WR1 in 2023 — the ball got spread around a ton, but the only real consistent playmakers on offense were RB Emani Bailey and Wiley.
Look for Williams, Richardson and newcomer McAlister to emerge as prime candidates to be Josh Hoover’s go-to guy. Why 2024 production could be better: The production from the WR and TE rooms is primed to improve. Not only was last year a new system for these guys to learn, but for big names like Williams, last year marked the first time getting consistent starter snaps.
Williams and McAlister should lead the way and Dabney is a phenomenal replacement for the departing Wiley. Why 2024 production could be worse: Receiving production relies on a lot of different factors. Not only is it Kendal Briles’ job to scheme these guys open, but the quarterback has to be able to efficiently get the ball into their hands.
The effectiveness of the run game also plays a huge role, and if the Frogs can’t run the ball well, they will be forced to pass more, giving opposing defenses an edge if they know what is coming. If any of these three factors falter, it could mean a dip in production for the pass catchers. Overall outlook: Besides Wiley, no other main target left the Frogs.
With the additions of McAlister, James and Dabney, Sonny Dykes has done an incredible job adding depth through the portal. The deeper room of pass catchers will allow Briles to utilize more bodies and continue to spread the ball out more, giving defenses a headache having to prepare for so many different weapons. While there is a lot that has to go right for these playmakers to be able to play to their top ability, Hoover and Briles have no shortage of firepower when it comes to the receiving room.
