Western Michigan Broncos head coach Tim Lester shuffled his coaching staff, including the promotion of Jake Moreland to offensive coordinator.
Western Michigan has decided to promote from within for its new offensive coordinator, one of several coaching changes for the Broncos. Western Michigan went 6-6 in Tim Lester's first season as head coach in 2017, and he has shuffled his staff. Kevin Johns left after one season as the Broncos' offensive coordinator to become offensive coordinator at Texas Tech. To fill that vacancy, Jake Moreland was promoted to offensive coordinator but will remain as the team's offensive line coach as well. Moreland was an All-Mid-American Conference tight end at Western Michigan in the 1990s and was a frequent target of Lester when the current head coach was a quarterback for the Broncos Also, Eric Evans will move from coaching the running backs to coaching the quarterbacks, and Terry Malone will become the running backs coach after being director of player development this past season. Dontae Wright was named co-special teams coordinator and safeties coach after spending last season as Tennessee Tech's special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach. "After evaluation of our staff heading into year two with the program, we wanted to keep as much continuity as possible as we continue to build towards MAC Championships," Lester said in a statement. "Following the departure of Kevin Johns, Coach Moreland was the right fit to step in and coordinate our offense."
