CFB Team Report - Virginia
PLAYERS TO WATCH --QB Bryce Perkins will be making his first start with Virginia and appearing in his first career FBS game after previously sitting out two seasons with Arizona State before compiling 11 total touchdowns at Arizona Western Community College last season. Perkins will provide a spark with his legs as well as an underrated arm. A start against a good FCS program in Richmond should allow Perkins to ease himself into major college football. --DB Brenton Nelson completed a stellar freshman campaign last season with four interceptions as he started all 13 games for the Cavaliers. Nelson's role will continue to grow this season as he anchors a stout Virginia secondary that looks to replace Blanding's 143 tackles and four interceptions. --RB Olamide Zaccheaus begins his senior season as Virginia's most dynamic offensive weapon. Zaccheaus totaled six touchdowns last season and led the Cavaliers in receiving with 895 yards and five touchdowns. Coupled with Perkins' speed and mobility out of the quarterback position, Zaccheaus should be even more dangerous this season in offensive coordinator Robert Anae's west coast offense. --LB Chris Peace had a solid junior season in 2017 as he totaled 68 tackles and racked up 7.5 sacks which was the most by any linebacker in the ACC. With the departure of Kiser, Peace will now look to lead a Virginia linebacking core that will have to carry the Cavaliers' front seven with a defensive line that is still a work in progress. SERIES HISTORY: Virginia leads Richmond 28-3-2 with the Cavaliers winning the last matchup in 2016. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We know what needs to happen. We need to win and we need to do it the right way. My philosophy is to develop great players and student-athletes. Our stadium will be full when we play football the way that allows it to be full." -- Bronco Mendenhall
