NFL notebook: WR Hurns signs with Cowboys

Free-agent wide receiver Allen Hurns agreed to a two-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced on Friday. The Cowboys did not disclose financial terms for Hurns, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the two-year deal is worth up to $12 million. Hurns, who joins fellow wideouts Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Deonte Thompson in Dallas, elected to alter his travel plans earlier this week after Mother Nature intervened. The 26-year-old initially planned to meet with the New York Jets after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday in a move that saved the team $7 million against the salary cap. As a Nor'easter was scheduled to hit New York on Wednesday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported the expected snowy weather conditions in the area prompted Hurns to visit the Cowboys instead. --H. Wayne Huizenga, former owner of the Miami Dolphins and the man who brought Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League to South Florida, died Thursday night at his home. He was 80. Huizenga, whose net worth in 2017 was reported to be $2.8 billion by Forbes Magazine, was the first man to own teams in three major sports leagues when he presided over the Dolphins, the then-Florida Marlins and Florida Panthers from 1994-98. --Free agent quarterback Brock Osweiler signed with the Miami Dolphins, the team announced on Friday. ESPN reported that it is a one-year contract. Osweiler played in six games for Denver in 2017, starting four, and completed 96 of 172 passes for 1,088 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. The Broncos went 0-4 in his starts this past season. --Offensive tackle Sam Young has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Miami Dolphins, multiple media outlets reported. Young started six games for the Dolphins in 2017 as Ja'Wuan James' replacement. --Defensive tackle Tom Johnson agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.7 million with the Seattle Seahawks, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. The 33-year-old Johnson has spent the last four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. --Free-agent wide receiver Terrelle Pryor agreed to terms with the New York Jets, multiple media outlets reported. Pryor had a disappointing season with the Washington Redskins in 2017, catching only 20 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown after he signed a one-year, $8 million contract. --Defensive end Josh Mauro, who signed with the New York Giants earlier this week, has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2018 regular season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances, the team announced. Mauro was released by the Arizona Cardinals on March 16, and was signed by the Giants three days later. --Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget has been suspended without pay by the NFL for the first four games of the 2018 regular season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances, the team announced. Liuget, 28, has started 100 of the 102 NFL games he has played during his seven-year NFL career. Liuget started all 12 games he played in 2017, when he had 21 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two passes knocked down. --Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Joe Berger announced his retirement. Berger, who has played both right guard and center, spent seven seasons with the Vikings after stops with the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys. --The Cleveland Browns signed unrestricted free-agent cornerback E.J. Gaines to a contract, the team announced. Gaines recorded 59 tackles, three forced fumbles and one interception in 11 games last season with the Buffalo Bills. --Prosecutors will not bring criminal charges against Buffalo Bills receiver Zay Jones, who was shown arguing with his brother while naked in a Los Angeles apartment building earlier this week. The Los Angeles County district attorney told TMZ Sports that there was insufficient evidence in the case against Jones, who was arrested after the disturbance in the apartment building. --The Carolina Panthers signed cornerback Ross Cockrell, safety Da'Norris Searcy and guard Jeremiah Sirles to contracts, the team announced. The Panthers revealed that Cockrell and Searcy signed two-year deals, but did not reveal financial terms. Cockrell's agents -- Reign Sports Management -- reported his contract was worth $6.8 million. Cockrell joins his third team in as many seasons and fourth in his career after spending 2017 with the New York Giants. He had a career-high three interceptions and team-leading 11 passes defensed to go along with 49 tackles last season. Searcy recorded 26 tackles and an interception while playing in all 16 games last season. He was limited to only six starts in 2017 after making 27 in his previous two seasons with the Titans. Sirles started four games and played in 14 last season with the Vikings. --The New England Patriots re-signed free-agent linebacker Marquis Flowers, the team announced. The Patriots did not disclose terms of the deal, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Flowers' deal is worth a maximum of $2.55 million. The 26-year-old Flowers recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 16 regular-season games during his first season with the Patriots in 2017. He added one sack and six tackles while playing in all three of New England's postseason games. --Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins underwent surgery to repair ligaments in his left thumb, NFL Network reported. It appears the operation, which was characterized as "offseason maintenance," was a minor procedure. Jenkins is expected to be ready for offseason workouts next month. --Former Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested on Friday morning in San Francisco for violating a court order, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The court order required Smith to keep away from a victim in an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred March 3. In the March 3 incident, Smith was taken into custody by San Francisco police and booked on misdemeanor charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism of less than $400. --The New York Jets have emerged as a serious contender to sign free agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who told Yahoo Sports that the Jets have made him a contract offer. NFL Network reported that the offer is the biggest yet for Suh, who has made visits to the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams, in addition to canceling a visit with the Oakland Raiders. --Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett was indicted by a Texas grand jury on a felony charge of injuring a 66-year-old paraplegic woman in February 2017 at Houston's NRG Stadium, multiple media outlets reported. Bennett was attending Super Bowl LI to watch his brother, New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett, play the game against the Atlanta Falcons. Michael Bennett, who played for the Seahawks at the time, allegedly pushed his way onto the field to celebrate with his brother after the game. In the process, he allegedly injured the elderly woman, who was on the NRG Stadium security team. --The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed offensive lineman Evan Smith, the team announced. According to the team website, Smith agreed to a two-year deal. Smith, who can play either guard or center, played in 15 games, including six starts, for Tampa Bay last season. --The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Bene Benwikere to a one-year contract, the team announced . He played 12 games for the Dallas Cowboys last season, but did not start any of them while recording two tackles and one pass defensed in 2017.
