NFL notebook: Browns WR Gordon to miss start of camp

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon (12) is sitting out the start of camp as part of his overall treatment plan.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon (12) is sitting out the start of camp as part of his overall treatment plan.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon announced that he will not be in attendance for the start of the team's training camp as part of his overall health and treatment plan. Gordon has missed the majority of the last three seasons because of suspensions related to violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy. The 27-year-old did not go into specifics about the nature of the treatment during his series of tweets over social media on Monday. The Browns announced that Gordon will be placed on the non-football illness reserve list "until he is ready to return." ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Gordon's decision was proactive and not as a result of a failed test. --Veteran outside linebacker Connor Barwin has agreed to a contract with the New York Giants. Barwin confirmed via Twitter that he has reached agreement on a contract with the Giants: "I'm excited to announce I've agreed to terms with the New York Football Giants. Let's go G-Men! #GiantsPride" The Giants are transitioning to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator James Bettcher, and they acquired inside linebacker Alec Ogletree in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams in March. Now the Giants have signed another former Rams linebacker. Barwin played in 14 games, including 13 starts, for the Rams in 2017. He collected five sacks and 34 total tackles last season. --Despite hints that he might hold out, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is planning to report to training camp on time on Wednesday, Kimberly Jones of NFL Network reported. Beckham wants a new contract, but apparently that will not prevent him from attending practice. Beckham said last month that he did not plan to hold out, but those around him suggested he might stay away from training camp as he pursues a new deal. It appears Beckham is willing to play this season for a base salary of $8.45 million in the final year of his rookie contract. Beckham was limited to four games in 2017 because of a season-ending ankle injury that required surgery. --Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy will report to training camp on Wednesday as police continue to investigate an alleged home invasion that left his former girlfriend hospitalized, according to a published report. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that McCoy is expected to be in attendance at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y., and that his status with the league has not changed. McCoy's ex-girlfriend, Delicia Cordon, told authorities she believed the football star had "something to do with" an unidentified person assaulting and robbing her on July 10 while she slept at her residence in Milton, Ga. In a 9-1-1 call released by Milton police, Cordon said she suspected McCoy was responsible. --Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson reported to training camp after skipping mandatory minicamp in June and two organized team activity practices as he sought a contract extension. Johnson posted a video of himself in front of his locker wearing a helmet on Monday, which is the reporting date for Cardinals rookies, quarterbacks and players coming off of injury. Johnson is set to make $1.88 million in the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. Johnson is expected to be a significant part of the offense in 2018 after missing nearly the entire 2017 season with a dislocated wrist sustained in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. --After not appearing in five games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, quarterback Johnny Manziel changed CFL teams Sunday night when he was acquired by the Montreal Alouettes in a multi-player trade. The deal reunites Manziel with Montreal head coach Mike Sherman, who recruited him to Texas A&M in 2011. He redshirted in 2011 and won the Heisman the following season under then first-year coach Kevin Sumlin. Manziel's only appearances for Hamilton were in two preseason games. In those games, he completed 21 of 31 passes with one touchdown while rushing six times for 19 yards. --Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, a first-round selection, signed his rookie contract with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced. McGlinchey agreed to a four-year deal that is worth $18.3 million. Listed at 6-foot-8 and 309 pounds, McGlinchey was selected by San Francisco with the ninth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He is expected to start the season at right tackle before ultimately replacing Pro Bowler Joe Staley at left tackle. --Rookie running back Sony Michel signed a contract with the New England Patriots, the team announced. Michel, who was the 31st overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, signed the standard deal for first-round picks: a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth season. The 23-year-old Michel rushed for 1,227 yards and 16 touchdowns during his senior season at Georgia while splitting time with now Cleveland Browns rookie Nick Chubb. Also on Monday, the Patriots announced offensive lineman Andrew Jelks has been placed on the reserve/retired list. --Denver Broncos outside linebacker Shane Ray did not require wrist surgery and is expected to be gradually worked into the team's training camp practices, according to a published report. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and James Palmer reported that a doctor determined that a fourth wrist surgery was not necessary for Ray, who likely was going to be sidelined for three months by the procedure. Ray, who was limited to just eight games last season, has been held out of the team's offseason program and wore a brace on his wrist throughout the sessions. --Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Maliek Collins is scheduled to begin training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, coach Jason Garrett said Monday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Collins is still recovering from a broken left foot he sustained in May during the team's offseason conditioning program. The injury required surgery, and it was the second time in four months he needed an operation on the fractured fifth metatarsal. Collins has had problems with his feet before. In his rookie season of 2016, he broke his right foot during the first week of offseason team activities, and that also required surgery. He was sidelined for three months but was available for the regular season. Garrett also said wide receiver Terrance Williams has not completely recovered from foot surgery he had in February and might begin camp on the PUP list. --The Oakland Raiders announced the team's revamped broadcast lineups for the team's 2018 television and radio broadcasts. It had been reported last week that Brent Musburger would replace Greg Papa as the Raiders' play-by-play radio voice and that Tom Flores was out as the color commentator. The team confirmed that Musburger will be the Raiders' new play-by-play announcer on radio, and he will be joined by former Raiders tackle Lincoln Kennedy, who will provide color commentary. Chris Townsend will report from the sidelines. Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon will join the television booth for the team's four preseason games, joining play-by-play voice Beth Mowins and former Raider and veteran color commentator Matt Millen. JT the Brick also returns to handle host and sideline reporter duties for the preseason broadcasts. --Despite a shoulder problem that prevented him from participating in offseason workouts, Atlanta Falcons defensive end Takk McKinley reportedly will not start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. That bit of encouraging news was provided by Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, who was given that information by a source. McKinley had surgery on his left shoulder in February, causing him to miss all of the offseason work. --Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Kendell Beckwith, who fractured his ankle in an April car accident, was placed on the non-football injury list, the team announced. Beckwith will miss the early stages of training camp but can be activated at any time. Beckwith played in 16 games last season, and he started nine of them. He totaled 73 tackles and had one sack. The Buccaneers also announced they signed safety Josh Liddell and defensive end Kiante Anderson to bring their roster to 90 players for training camp. --Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry sees a bright future for his new team. Landry, in fact, told ohio.com that the Browns are "definitely a playoff-caliber team" in regard to talent. "It's great to have those type of aspirations for yourself, for your team, and, honestly, for me, that's how we're supposed to think," Landry said of the playoffs. "That's what we're supposed to believe, and the more that mindset becomes the mindset of the locker room, it's going to help us get that much better." Landry signed a five-year, $75 million contract extension with the Browns after he was acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. --The New England Patriots re-signed receiver Devin Lucien, the team announced. The Patriots also announced they released defensive back David Jones. Lucien has never played in an NFL game. The Patriots drafted Lucien in the seventh round of the 2016 draft out of Arizona State, but he was waived before the regular season started and did not make a roster his rookie season.
