Chargers DT Liuget (knee) out for season
Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Corey Liuget during the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Aug. 31, 2017.
Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget will miss the remainder of the season with a right knee injury.
Liuget was carted to the locker room after sustaining a torn quad tendon in the first half of the Chargers' 23-22 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Head coach Anthony Lynn announced after the game that Liuget will miss the rest of the season for Los Angeles (7-3), which has lost two key cogs to its defense in as many weeks. Linebacker Denzel Perryman was lost for the season with a knee injury in a 20-6 win at Oakland in Week 10.
Liuget recorded 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks in six contests since returning from a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
The 28-year-old Liuget has played in 108 games during his NFL career since being selected by the Chargers with the 18th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Liuget started all 12 games he played in 2017, when he had 21 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two passes knocked down.
The 6-foot-2, 300-pound Liuget is still under contract for another year, but the Chargers would save $8 million in cap space should they part ways with him in the offseason.
--TE Antonio Gates was questionable with a knee injury but ended up playing and hauling in five passes for 80 yards and a score. Three of his receptions came on third-and-longs while another reception was good for a score. He passed Derrick Mason for 18th-most receptions in NFL history.
--DE Joey Bosa made his 2018 debut due to injury and ended up playing 31 snaps.
--RB Melvin Gordon totaled 156 yards, his sixth straight game with at least 120 yards from scrimmage.
--QB Philip Rivers finished 28-of-43 for 401 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has thrown at least two touchdowns in every game this season. Rivers connected with five different receivers for 121 yards in the first quarter.
--WR Keenan Allen led all receivers in targets (12), catches (9) and yards (89). He passed Ronnie Harmon for seventh all-time for career receptions in Chargers history.
--DT Corey Liuget will miss the remainder of the season with a right knee injury. He left Sunday's loss to the Broncos in the first half.
