CFB notebook: Michigan LB Bush injures hip
Michigan's Devin Bush (10) suffered a leg injury against Ohio State on Saturday.
Michigan junior middle linebacker Devin Bush Jr., who is projected to be a first-round pick in the NFL draft, left Saturday's 62-39 loss to Ohio State with a hip injury.
Bush was helped off the field during the third quarter and could not put any weight on his left leg.
"Devin, he has a hip (injury)," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game. "I don't think it's going to be anything long term, but it wasn't good for today."
Bush, a finalist for the 2018 Butkus Award and the Bronco Nagurski Trophy. is projected to be the No. 31 pick in the 2019 draft by Rob Rang, senior analyst at NFLDraftScout.com. He has a team-high 79 tackles after recording six Saturday and has 185 for his career, including 10 sacks. He also broke up a pass.
Several other Michigan players left the game with injuries. Quarterback Shea Patterson suffered a bone bruise on a knee in the third quarter and returned for only one play. He was replaced by freshman Joe Milton. Wide receiver Zach Gentry sustained a concussion, cornerback David Long left the game in the first half with a hip injury, and receiver Grant Perry has a hip pointer, Harbaugh said.
--Boston College running back A.J. Dillon was knocked out of Saturday's game against No. 20 Syracuse with an ankle injury.
Dillon had rushed for 56 yards on 12 carries before aggravating an ankle injury that had forced him to sit out two games earlier this season.
The 6-foot, 245-pound Dillon rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries last week at Florida State to become the first running back in school history with 1,000-yard seasons as a freshman and a sophomore.
--Central Florida quarterback McKenzie Milton underwent surgery Friday night after suffering a devastating knee injury in a game against South Florida.
Milton's father confirmed multiple media reports that his son underwent surgery at Tampa General Hospital, telling ESPN that the procedure was to repair knee damage and "other internal issues."
The university did not release information on the status of Milton, who was hit while scrambling, causing the leg to bend in an unnatural direction. ESPN did not show any replays of the gruesome injury.
--Houston All-American defensive tackle Ed Oliver's return from a knee injury did not last long.
Oliver, who has been sidelined for the previous four games, aggravated the knee injury in the first half of Friday's 52-31 loss to Memphis and did not return.
The reigning Outland Trophy winner is expected to miss two to three weeks, Cougars coach Major Applewhite said Friday night. Such a timetable would allow Oliver to return to play in a bowl game, but there has been speculation throughout his injury that he may elect to shut it down for the season.
--Mississippi wide receiver D.K. Metcalf announced via social media that he will forgo the final two years of his college eligibility and enter the 2019 NFL Draft.
"I have enjoyed my time at Ole Miss, gaining brothers and a family," Metcalf wrote on his personal Twitter account. "I want to thank the University, my coaches, and teammates, but most importantly my family for helping me through this process."
Injuries hampered Metcalf during his tenure at Ole Miss. He suffered a broken foot after appearing in only two games as a freshman and was granted an extra year of eligibility.
--No. 19 Northwestern was without top wide receiver Flynn Nagel for Saturday's 24-16 victory over Illinois.
Nagel is dealing with an unspecified leg injury suffered in last week's 24-14 win at Minnesota that clinched the Big Ten West Division title.
Saturday's game had no bearing on the conference standings for Northwestern, which will play Ohio State in the Big Ten title game on Dec. 1 in Indianapolis.
