CFB notebook: McElwain reportedly offered job at Michigan
Former Florida head coach Jim McElwain, center, was reportedly offered a job as Michigan's wide receivers coach.
Jim McElwain was offered a job as Michigan's wide receivers coach, SI.com reported, citing multiple sources.
The report also said that it's "a role that could eventually include offensive coordinator duties."
McElwain was fired in October as head coach of Florida, with which he spent nearly three years. He posted a 22-12 mark with two SEC East titles during his time with the Gators.
The 55-year-old had left the head coaching job at Colorado State, where he turned around the program. His other experience on offense includes coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama under Nick Saban, at Fresno State and in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.
McElwain's other college coaching stops were Michigan State from 2003-05 as assistant head coach and at Louisville, Montana State and Eastern Washington.
-- Rutgers hired Noah Joseph to serve as the team's defensive backs coach, according to a published report.
Joseph, who just completed his fifth season at Indiana, will replace co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Bill Busch, per NJ.com. Busch left the program last week to take a similar position at LSU.
Joseph played for current Scarlet Knights coach Chris Ash when the two were at Drake in the late 1990s.
Joseph also served as a graduate assistant under Ash at Drake in 2000 and Iowa State in 2002. He followed that up with stops at Eastern Illinois (2003-06), Montana State (2007-11) and North Texas (2012-13) prior to heading to Indiana.
-- Kansas State defensive coordinator Tom Hayes retired, ending a coaching career that spans more than four decades.
Hayes called it quits after spending seven seasons -- the past six as defensive coordinator -- with the Wildcats, the school announced. He will remain on the staff as a quality control assistant through the end of his current contract, which expires in April.
Blake Seiler was promoted to defensive coordinator after serving as linebackers coach for Kansas State this past season. Seiler played collegiately at the school and coached defensive ends at his alma mater from 2013-16.
In addition, Brian Norwood was named as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach.
-- Nathaniel Watson, who committed to Mississippi State on national signing day, was arrested on numerous traffic violations following his involvement in an accident that injured a passenger in his car.
Watson, a wide receiver/linebacker from Maplesville (Ala.) High School, was charged with assault first degree -- a felony -- in the wake of a drag-racing mishap two weeks earlier, according to a statement from the Maplesville Police Department, per the Clanton Advertiser.
The accident occurred on Feb. 1 as Watson and senior teammate Tyrone Davis engaged in a drag race that started in front of the school, police said.
No court date has been set for either Watson or Davis, who was cited for reckless endangerment among a number of charges.
-- Arkansas State sued the University of Miami for $650,000 in damages for failing to reschedule a football game that was canceled in September due to Hurricane Irma.
The suit was filed in Craighead County District Court.
Arkansas State claimed in the lawsuit that Miami "refused to timely and reasonably reschedule the game in years in which it has openings."
The schools were supposed to play last year, but Hurricane Irma wiped out the Sept. 9 game in Jonesboro, Ark. Reportedly, the contract signed in 2013 by the schools stipulates that if either school cancels the game, they must pay the other $650,000.
