Jets practice squad tracker: With 53-man roster set, Joe Douglas keeps prepping for Week 1
NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Jets general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh have already endured the hardest part of the offseason: telling more than 30 players that they wouldn’t be making a NFL roster in the span of a few days.
And while the Jets have trimmed their roster down to the initial 53 men, the roster won’t look the same on Monday, Sept. 11, when they start the season against the Bills on Monday Night Football.
The Jets still have a couple of moves that are certain to be made, perhaps as soon as Wednesday. They still have potential free agents they can sign. And they still have to build a 16-man practice squad to give them insurance before the season, and perhaps to stash some talented players who might crack the roster if someone gets injured.
Here’s a look at everything you need to know as the Jets continue to build their roster in preparation for Week 1.
Waiver claims
The Jets were not granted any waiver claims, which means they don’t have to clear a spot on their 53-man roster to accommodate a new guy right now. Two players they waived were claimed to the 53-man roster of other teams: Offensive lineman Trystan Colon was claimed by the Cardinals, and linebacker Claudin Cherelus was claimed by the Panthers.
Practice squad
Here are the known members of the Jets practice squad, as of the latest update time on this story. The first 10 were announced by the team Wednesday afternoon.
QB Tim Boyle: spent camp with the Jets and returns as their third QB.
DL Tanzel Smart: He’ll start the year on the practice squad, but if the Jets have any injury issues Smart knows the system and will give them a viable replacement.
TE Zack Kuntz: The seventh-round pick was Douglas’ first pick who didn’t make the roster as a rookie. But the Jets can keep developing him since he cleared waivers.
S Trey Dean: He had a strong camp with the Jets and returns to the practice squad.
OL Adam Pankey: He spent nearly all of last season on the Jets’ practice squad and returns after being cut.
DL Marquiss Spencer: He joined the practice squad last fall and was around in training camp. Now he’s back on the practice squad.
LB Samuel Eguavoen: He played every game for the Dolphins over the past five years, mostly as a special teamer. Now he find a home on the Jets’ practice squad after signing early in camp and getting cut.
LB Caleb Johnson: The Jets signed the undrafted free agent back in April, and he got cut after training camp. Now he’ll continue to learn from C.J. Mosley on the practice squad.
CB Craig James: The 27-year old (who played for the Vikings and Eagles early in his career) joined the Jets practice squad before last season. Now he’s back for another year.
CB Nehemiah Shelton: The undrafted rookie out of San Jose State, who signed with the Jets less than two weeks ago, is sticking around after starting his pro career playing for the Memphis Showboats in the USFL.
S Tyreque Jones: an undrafted rookie who spent camp with the Titans.
RB Xazavian Valladay: The undrafted rookie spent camp with the Steelers.
Moves to expect
UPDATE: Morstead and Bawden re-signed with the Jets on Wednesday afternoon, filling the spots of Warren and Yeboah who went on IR and are out at least the first four games.
The Jets have a couple of vested veterans who are likely to return to the roster soon: punter Thomas Morstead and Nick Bawden. (Morstead is a lock, Bawden might not be). For that to happen, the Jets will have to clear space, likely by placing players on injured reserve. Two candidates: rookie offensive tackle Carter Warren and tight end Kenny Yeboah, who were dealing with injuries late in camp.
