Cowboys' Jerry Jones on if QB Dak Prescott is 'over-criticized'
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) throws a pass during the first half of an NFL...
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is fresh off what was perhaps one of the easiest nights he’s had as an NFL quarterback.
Prescott wasn’t sacked, didn’t throw any picks and needed just 24 passing attempts and 143 yards to seal a 40-0 shutout victory for the Cowboys before handing it off to backup Cooper Rush for the majority of the fourth quarter.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made his weekly postgame appearance on on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] and was asked about Prescott’s season-opening performance, as well as his opinion of how the national media covers Prescott.
Here’s what Jones had to say about his QB1:
Question: You said you’d give Mike McCarthy an ‘A’ for playcalling, how much do you want Dak to be calling the game at the line of scrimmage? Versus trusting what’s being called over the headset?
Jones: “Yeah, he’s getting more help now. The offensive line is making more calls at the line of scrimmage. [Dak] is making less calls than he ever has in his career. The line’s making a lot of those calls, and that’s good. The goal was to cut what he was doing before the snap down. We had him loaded, boy. He was really loaded up. So cut that down, not only after the ball is snapped, give him a chance for some faster openness from your wide receivers, whether it’s out of the backfield or the slot. But it’s a quicker ball release for Dak, and that was done in [the rainy conditions].”
Question: I feel like Dak has been covered more this offseason than any I can remember. He popped up last night again after Josh Allen’s 3 interceptions, ‘If Dak had that kind of game, he’d get crushed.’ Is Dak Prescott over-covered? Over-criticized?
Jones: “Well from my perspective, he’s not. Is he over-covered from the standpoint of, does it hurt him? That’s not your question, but it does not hurt him. If I’ve ever seen anybody that’s so sound, and is psychic, so sound in his approach to business (and this is business, for him). So prepared, he relies on his preparation better than anybody I’ve been around. And of course he stays solid and stays confident out there.
“As Roger Staubach said, ‘I don’t know whether you’re gonna have a move-around guy or a conventional pocket guy, I don’t know about that, but you get somebody that team will follow, that’s the key.’ And of course he’s the best leader that I’ve ever seen at that position. We’ve been around some good ones. Aikman’s outstanding, Tony [Romo] was outstanding, but Dak’s quite a leader out there.”
