Trent Dilfer says Texas QB Quinn Ewers is a generational talent
Texas fans were excited about Quinn Ewers being a Longhorn before he even committed the first time. Even after Ewers pledged to the Longhorns, but later backed off his commitment to play at Ohio State, there was a belief amongst Texas fans that he would end up in the burnt orange eventually. That he did, as he opted to leave Ohio State following his lone season in Columbus. Buy Longhorns Tickets The former No. 1 overall recruit held a rare perfect rating and generated a ton of buzz prior to his first season as the starting quarterback, but he didn’t quite live up to the hype. There were flashes of promise against Alabama, and even signs of greatness against Oklahoma, but when it came down to it Ewers was not nearly as consistent as the Longhorns needed him to be. He struggled throughout the season with the deep ball, and eventually was phased out of the offense as Texas leaned heavily on Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. However, while many people were quick to jump the gun and denounce that Ewers won’t live up to the hype, people forget he left high school a year early and that he still has room to grow. According to reports this offseason, Ewers has changed his body, preparation, and is expected to take a major leap in 2023. Despite his average first season, Ewers has been projected as a first round pick and has one quarterback guru in Trent Dilfer calling him generational. The newly hired UAB coach and former Elite 11 coach recently discussed Ewers’ potential along with other NFL Draft eligible quarterbacks with Sports Illustrated, and spoke highly of him but also expressed the importance of him playing more. “He’s gotta play more football,” Trent Dilfer said. “He’s an extremely talented passer, like generational, Jeff George–ish. But he’s gotta play more football, man. Let’s not make the [Mark] Sanchez mistake again. Let’s not make the [Mitch] Trubisky mistake. You gotta play 30 games before we really know.” He continued talking about Ewers’ rare arm talent going as far to say it’s “stupid.” “Oh, it’s incredible arm talent. Like, stupid arm talent. Jeff George, that’s the comparable. And now maybe this generation doesn’t remember Jeff George, but you’re old enough to remember him. Dan Marino said it was stupid. John Elway said it was stupid. All of us who had great talent would watch Jeff George and say, I can’t do that.” Ewers is hoping to lead Texas to their first Big 12 Championship victory since 2009, while Longhorns fans are hoping that he can guide Texas to the College Football Playoff.
