Andrew Whitworth

A model of consistency, Whitworth set an LSU record by playing and starting in 52 games during his career. He never missed a game or practice due to injury during his five years with the Tigers. He missed only one practice during his career and that was to attend graduation ceremonies in December of 2005. The 52 career starts ranks as the second-highest total in NCAA history, trailing the 53 started by Derrick Strait of Oklahoma (2001-04). Whitworth is also a gifted athlete off the football field. He is an avid golfer who shoots in the 80s and was a junior tennis champion in Louisiana. He was also heavily involved in the school's community program, enjoying his time serving as a motivational speaker to youth groups, and is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Whitworth was widely considered one of the nation's top offensive line prospects at West Monroe High School. He was rated the fifth-best offensive lineman in the nation by Rivals.com and ranked sixth by CNNSI.com. He was named first-team All-America by USA Today, Fox Sports and Super Prep. Whitworth participated in the National All-Star game and was named to Max Emfinger's list of the top 18 players in Louisiana. He led his team to the Class 5A state title in 1997, 1998 and 2000. West Monroe High was ranked first in the nation by Rivals.com in 2000, when Whitworth added first-team 2-5A All-District and 5A All-State honors. Whitworth was a member of the Baton Rouge Advocate's Super Dozen, the Shreveport Times Top 20 and the New Orleans Times-Picayune's Top 16 Blue Chip list for the state of Louisiana. He was named the co-Offensive Player of the Year for North Louisiana by Louisiana Football Magazine. Whitworth spent the 2001 season as a redshirt at Louisiana State. He started every game at left tackle, grading 85 percent for blocking consistency and earning freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News. He was an All-Southeastern Conference choice in 2003, registering 105 key blocks/knockdowns while allowing five quarterback sacks. Whitworth was a first-team All-SEC pick in 2004. He continued to man the left tackle position, participating in 799 plays while giving up only one sack. He was credited with 96 key blocks/knockdowns for the Tigers. In 2005, he extended his string of games of not allowing a sack to 22. He picked up All-America honors while registering 104 key blocks.

whitworth is a stay-at-home type of blocker who knows how to use his size and reach to sustain. he takes a few false steps coming off the snap and gets too high in his stance to produce a strong anchor. he is not the most agile blocker you will find and might have to shift to right tackle, where he will not be exposed as much to speedy edge rushers.

He has outstanding size and good playing strength, but lacks ideal speed for the position. He is not explosive off the ball and has marginal drive in attempts to create a new line of scrimmage for the ground game. He might be slow to redirect, but does stay on his feet and has decent balance and body control.

Needs better weight distribution, as he has a marginal bubble and thin legs and appears too top-heavy...Lacks mobility, as he struggles to adjust when working on the move...Does not have the foot speed to get into the second level, taking bad angles while tending to keep his head down when blocking in space...Takes false steps (hops out of his stance) coming off the snap and can be run over by a fast-charging edge rusher when he does this...Struggles to adjust to edge rushers, but is effective sitting and waiting to use his size and long reach to sustain...Plays too high in his stance, struggling to anchor, and has slow feet when sliding laterally.

whitworth has a slow slide movement and lateral quickness, but shows good hand placement and punch to control defenders after contact. he is effective with down and reach blocks and also is adept at hooking defenders. however, he struggles to get to the second level and is too inconsistent attacking linebackers.

Whitworth has some ability to pull in short range area, but is only adequate blocking on the move and will fall off blocks when having to work in space. He has a good pass set with the ability to slide, but struggles with the speed rush and is slow to redirect. He has the ability to switch on stunts and is effective picking up blitzes quickly.
