Trey Hendrickson
TE/ST/KICKBLOCK, DE
· Florida Atlantic
It is a testament to the talent and depth of this year's edge rusher class that Hendrickson - the reigning Defensive Player of the Year for Conference USA and an East-West Shrine game standout - has not earned more national attention. Hendrickson leaves FAU as one of the program's most celebrated defenders, as well as its all-time leader in sacks (29.5), tackles for loss (41) and forced fumbles (seven). He owns the two most prolific seasons in FAU history in both sacks (13.5 in 2015 and 9.5 in 2016) and tackles for loss (15 in both 2015 and 2016). His production as a senior (including a career-high 50 tackles and four blocked kicks) was all the more impressive given that he faced nearly constant double teams and saw duties on special teams and even as a short yardage blocker on offense. Hendrickson emerged as a difference-maker for the Owls as sophomore, registering 32 tackles, including 10 for loss and five sacks, as well as two forced fumbles. He earned playing time even as a freshman and from the start showed an intriguing ability to raise his level of play against top competition, earning his first career multiple tackle performance against Auburn, first start against Nebraska (two tackles), second career sack against Alabama (among three tackles), two tackles and a sack against Kansas State and a five tackle, two sack performance against Florida that earned him C-USA Player of the Week honors in 2015. STRENGTHS: Hendrickson looks the part of an NFL defensive end with broad shoulders, a tapered middle and good overall musculature. Hendrickson is a quality athlete, showing surprising balance, change of direction and speed given his frame. While perhaps lacking elite burst off the ball, Hendrickson runs the arc fluidly, accelerating around the corner and flattening out with good speed to stalk the quarterback. He shows very good awareness of the ball, sniffing out screens and misdirection and anticipating where ballcarriers are going, traits which FAU took full advantage of by playing him on offense and defense, as well as dropping him back into coverage or as a spy on mobile quarterbacks. He chops his hands effectively to rip through the reach offensive tackles and shows good core strength, balance and awareness to fight through double-teams. Hendrickson possesses enough length and strength to drag down ballcarriers attempting to run by him and is a reliable open-field tackler, overall, with a knack for punching the ball free. WEAKNESSES: Hendrickson will be seen by some as a try-hard player with limited athletic upside. He does not possess ideal initial burst and often takes wide arcs in an attempt to flank them. He has a somewhat slim lower body, including narrow hips and relatively thin legs. This, along with his inconsistent pad level, can leave Hendrickson struggling to hold up when opponents run at him. Further, Hendrickson possesses just average arm length (32 1/4"). IN OUR VIEW: Hendrickson lacks the elite quickness and bend to leave scouts buzzing but he possesses good size and is both physical and passionate in his play. Do not be among those surprised when he outplays his likely middle round selection and proves a solid contributor off the edge early in his NFL career.
