Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton, Texas A&M, DE, 6026, 257, Jr.
Draft Profile
Frankly: (To Be Added)
Overview
Scourton presents as an explosive edge rusher primed for immediate impact in a 4-3 defensive system. His ability to convert speed to power and execute advanced rush setups makes him particularly effective from a three-point stance. Early in his career, he will shine as a designated pass rusher, leveraging his spin move and polished technique to disrupt quarterbacks on third downs. As his stamina improves and his counter moves develop, Scourton's role should expand into an every-down edge setter capable of both pressuring quarterbacks and anchoring against the run. His youth (20 years old), combined with strong athletic testing and production against top competition in the Big Ten and SEC, suggests high upside. While limitations in handling double teams and expanding his rush arsenal cap his immediate impact, Scourton projects as a potential Pro Bowl-caliber player by year three with continued growth and refinement.
Background
A Bryan, Texas native, Scourton rose from high school standout to one of the most feared pass rushers in college football. At Bryan High School, his dominance earned him All-District recognition and an Army All-American Bowl selection before committing to Purdue. Scourton’s sophomore year at Purdue saw him lead the Big Ten with 10 sacks, cementing his status as a rising star. Seeking tougher competition, he transferred to Texas A&M, where he continued to thrive against SEC opponents. His junior season featured 14 tackles for loss and 5 sacks, earning him First-Team All-SEC honors and showcasing his ability to step up in clutch moments, including a game-changing strip-sack against Arkansas. Scourton’s ascent exemplifies his ability to adapt and elevate his game at every level.
Scouting Report
Pros: Scourton’s devastating spin move combines precision and quickness, consistently beating offensive tackles. His advanced pass rush toolkit features effective club-swim, cross-chop, and two-hand swipe moves, keeping blockers on edge and enabling consistent pocket disruption. His first-step explosiveness allows him to exploit oversetting tackles, exposing protection schemes. When converting speed to power, he displays the ability to drive tackles backward, creating chaos for quarterbacks. Scourton’s play strength at the point of attack makes him highly effective against tight ends attempting to seal edges in the run game. His relentless motor ensures involvement in plays even when initially blocked, and his special teams experience adds immediate value to any team while he continues to develop.
Cons: Tight hips limit Scourton’s ability to flatten around the edge, often pushing him up the arc against technically sound tackles. He struggles to maintain leverage against double teams, occasionally getting washed out on plays run directly at him. When his initial pass rush move stalls, his plan can falter due to underdeveloped counter techniques, leaving opportunities to chain rushes unrealized. Scourton’s tackling in space is inconsistent, as he sometimes dives and misses rather than securing with proper breakdown technique. Fatigue affects his pad level, particularly when playing from a two-point stance, leading to losses in battles he should otherwise win.
Preseason 2024 Report
OVERVIEW
Nic Scourton is a high-upside edge rusher with a relentless motor and the tools to disrupt any backfield. His ability to convert speed to power, paired with a dynamic spin move, makes him a consistent threat off the edge. Scourton's knack for setting the edge and racking up pressures is evident in his game tape, showcasing his potential to be a key contributor from day one. Despite his strengths, Scourton has some areas to refine. He needs to expand his arsenal of counter moves and improve hand placement to maximize his pass-rushing potential. His bend around the edge lacks fluidity, which could limit his effectiveness on third downs. Developing these aspects will be crucial for his transition to the pro level. Projected as a first-round talent, Scourton has the traits NFL teams covet in a pass rusher. With his frame, explosive power, and versatility, he can be an immediate impact player. If he polishes his technique and addresses his negatives. Scourton has the ceiling to become a dominant force in the NFL.
